Ten years ago today I created the 305th post for Greenford 365. To mark the blog’s anniversary I will attempt to post a photo every day throughout 2022.

A number of streets and places around Greenford Broadway have the name “Stanhope” in them. The block now taken up by V. B. and Sons (formerly Sainsbury’s) was once Stanhope Villa and its gardens, probably part of the grounds of Stanhope Park, a large house built in the nineteenth century which must have had magnificent views towards Harrow as it was at the top of a fairly steep hill. I’ve been able to see as far as the Kellogg tower on good days from the pavement in front of the houses in Oldfield Lane South that now stand on the site of the main house. Stanhope Park Road runs close to what seems to have been a driveway between the two buildings. According to census records, most of the tenants or leaseholders were wealthy businessmen but at times it stood empty or was occupied by a caretaker. The Stanhope houses were the last to succumb to development in the 1930s when the landscape around Oldfield Lane South changed to provide for the needs of its many new residents, bringing a new police station, a library and a clinic.
