JAMES LEE OCT 06, Whitton Avenue East

Ten years ago today I created the 270th post for Greenford 365. To mark the blog’s anniversary I will attempt to post a photo every day throughout 2022.

For years I’ve wondered what the “J” in “J LEE” stood for, as I’ve walked past a BT manhole cover in Greenford Road, the name scratched into the wet cement ten years ago this month. A few weeks ago chance led me to walk past an example of the prolific cement signer’s work that included his full name. There are so many of them that James Lee must have been the one carrying out the work, rather than spotting sections of wet cement, and there are so many questions I want to ask him. Did he get into trouble for doing it? Did his bosses mind? Was he just proud of his work? I’ve found his name in Bennetts Avenue, the footpath near Cayton Sports Ground and elsewhere on Greenford Road. I’ve even seen it in West Ealing. There are probably many more, that are disappearing gradually as pavements are repaired and improved.
