Ten years ago today I created the 203rd post for Greenford 365. To mark the blog’s anniversary I will attempt to post a photo every day throughout 2022.
During the first 2020 Covid-19 lockdown many people discovered gardening and the simple pleasure of growing flowers from seed. Sunflowers were especially popular because they are easy to grow with a reasonably high success rate. This year they have been a reminder of the continuing war in Ukraine, one of the largest suppliers of sunflower seeds from which cooking oil is made – the conflict has affected its availability and cost. In February a video of a Ukranian woman confronting Russian soldiers was seen around the world, in which she told them to put sunflower seeds in their pockets so that they would grow once they were killed in combat on Ukrainian soil.
