Swan, Grand Union Canal at Oldfield Lane North

Ten years ago today I created the 174th post for Greenford 365.

To mark the blog’s anniversary I will attempt to post a photo every day throughout 2022.

I came across the remains of what could only be a swan egg in Berkeley Avenue and thought I’d check on the bird that has been living close to the bridge over the canal in Oldfield Lane North. This swan has used plastic found in its environment as well as the more traditional grasses and leaves to build its broad flat nest and raised its cygnets in full sight of residents, boaters and builders working on the surrounding development, fed all the bread it can eat. I’ve no idea whether the egg was from this nest or another less obvious one but it must have taken human intervention to move it. Once all the tower blocks are up small corners of the wild like this one will be all the developer has to prove their claims.
