Ice cream van, Bennetts Avenue

Ten years ago today I created the 165th post for Greenford 365. To mark the blog’s anniversary I will attempt to post a photo every day throughout 2022.

There was a time when the chimes of an ice cream van would attract a small crowd to buy 99s with a Flake, strawberry sauce and/or sprinkles. Less common now, when you can fill your freezer with bargain packs from the supermarket. These vans are so evocative of summer and childhood. A human rights activist told me she had taken a phone call from a Death Row inmate in the US who had grown up in the UK. As they spoke he could hear a van pass her home and he asked her to hold up the receiver so that he could listen to a reminder of happier times.
