Formerly Gilbert, Oldfield Lane North

Ten years ago today I created the 114th post for Greenford 365. To mark the blog’s anniversary I will attempt to post a photo every day throughout 2022.

Ten years ago I photographed a small parade of shops that stood in the same place as this new development. It was a local landmark because of the stylish sign over the shop on the corner, known to everyone as “Gilbert”. There were protests at the planning application stage, not just because of the loss of heritage. There were concerns that, first a banqueting hall and then a hotel proposed for the site would bring a lot of cars to an area already short of parking spaces. In the end a proposal for housing defeated the objectors, there are too many reasons for councillors to tick boxes for it, and the developer built what has been marketed as “Greenford Gate”, although the reason for that name remains their secret.
