I’ve found it difficult to be sure but I think this was where barges that brought tea and other goods to the Lyons factory were unloaded. The bend in the canal shown on the map seems to match the aerial photos of the site. The basin is large but appears to be redundant now, just an interesting feature by the tow path. This was once covered in factory buildings belonging to a company that was a household name, with tea houses on many high streets. Lyons began developing the site in the 1920s and it became a model of modern manufacturing. Pathe News recorded the visit of HRH the Prince of Wales in 1928. The roads that crossed the site were often lined with trees such as Auriol Drive which crosses the canal here, close to the basin.
