Somehow these roses survived yesterday’s thunderstorm and heavy rain. I think front gardens have survived in Whitton Avenue West because of the way it is laid out, on a steep slope with wide grass banks between the road and the houses. That makes it quite a good place to find roses at this time of year. I think they remain a favourite because everyone recognises them. There are so many varieties available now, I saw white, orange, pink and scarlet ones as well as unusual blends just in this street. White and pink seem to be the preferred colours but you occasionally come across a yellow variety. Some householders still grow roses even though they use most of the front garden to park their cars. I think they look best spilling over a garden wall where anyone walking past can benefit from their scent.
