One year later, Westway Cross retail park

This time last year even Greenford was touched by the riots that swept the UK following the shooting of Mark Duggan by police in London. The employees of this shop must have been stunned when they found a bin sitting in a hole in the window where looters had smashed their way in. Neighbouring premises escaped with two cracked windows but it was a shock to have this sort of thing happen on your doorstep. Greenford got off very lightly – elsewhere in the borough residents lost homes and possessions, traders lost their businesses and Richard Mannington Bowes lost his life. He had tried to put out a fire started by rioters in central Ealing and had been attacked, dying three days later in the local hospital. A fund was set up in his memory to support those in Ealing affected by the riots.
